The virtuous woman

Focus on healthy relationshps

On this column, we have done studies of a lot of women in the Bible such as the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31; Queen Esther, Eve–the mother of all living–and Deborah the judge, among others.

Retracing the life of Jael, unknown yet courageous

If I may ask, prior to this article, did you know Jael? When one mentions the women from the Old Testament, for instance, Eve the mother of all living, Esther the Queen, Ruth the daughter-in-law of Naomi, Rebecca the loved one of Jacob, Sarah the wife of Abraham and the list goes on, one immediately recognises them and even begin to tell their story from A to Z.

In the New Testament one can be reminded of Elizabeth mother of John and the Samaritan woman, among others.  When it comes to the name Mary, we may think of: Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Mary the sister of Lazarus e.t.c.

Retracing the life of Jael, unknown yet courageous

Jael - Unknown yet courageously used by God for one of the greatest victories ever recorded in the Bible!  Virtuous woman, never look down upon yourself.

As I began to study Jael, I fail to contain my excitement on facts I would like to share with you. Firstly, as I was reading chapters 4 and 5 of Judges, I note that before Jael is introduced by name, a prophecy is given about her by Deborah in Judges 4:9

Fearfully and wonderfully made!

We have just finished a powerful study on the unknown yet courageous woman – Jael.

If we look back in history, we can see that many a times God’s ongoing plan seemed to hinge on the response of a woman. As we read through the Bible, we find a Deborah here and a Jael there, among others.

Retracing the life of Jael, unknown yet courageous

As I conclude the study on this powerful woman Jael, may you be reminded virtuous woman, that although you might be relatively unknown to people but as long as you are known to the almighty God, you can do mighty exploits.

Retracing the life of Jael, unknown yet courageous

I had finished Deborah’s article with mention of the ‘little known Jael’, the heroic woman who killed the ‘wanted dead or alive’ Canaanite captain Sisera. I describe her as such because whenever you talk of the book of Judges, the names that usually come up are that of Deborah, Barak, and even Sisera yet there is little or no mention at all of the mighty woman who finally nailed down the enemy!

‘Jael who?’ - you ask!

Picture with me this woman in her tent, going about her daily chores.  Imagine her in her tent, pondering what the next meal would be.  Despite the fiercest battle going on with the Canaanites, she knew that life must go on.  She dare not sit still for time wasted is life wasted.

Celebrating the life of Anna Nyirenda Mafuleka

When you want to celebrate such a glorious life that is Anna Nyirenda Mafuleka, vocabulary fails to describe who she was. Indeed ‘Who can find a virtuous woman? For her worth is far above rubies.’
