Keep politics out of parastatals

The Joyce Banda administration has scored a mark by appointing a good mix of people into parastatal boards.
Going through the list of the appointees, comprising men and women with good track records and from diverse professions, one feels that government is now getting down to serious business of ending the many challenges that have beset the country.
But appointing professionals into crucial positions such as these is one thing and allowing them to do what they have been hired to do is another.
We are saying this because in the past government would hire professionals to champion a particular cause, but they failed to deliver because the appointing authority ended up throwing spanners into the works through uncalled for political interference.
For sure, Malawians would not love to see a replay of such depressing scenarios, especially this time when our economy is in dire need of resuscitation.
This is why we see the appointments as an opportunity for President Banda and her People’s Party (PP) government to show Malawians that they are different from previous regimes by allowing the professionals to do what they are good at, without interference.
Otherwise, if politics is kept out of their work, Malawi stands to benefit from their vast experience.
