Well-known diagnostician and College of Medicine academician, Professor John Chisi, on Sunday deviated from his normal duties of diagnosing diseases and giving lectures to ‘preach the gospel of hope to the poor’ in Mulanje.

Charity work not about religion—MAM chair

Chairperson of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) Sheikh Idrissah Muhammad says religion should not be used as a criterion for identifying beneficiaries of charity work.

Muhammad said this recently when his association donated relief items in Monkey Bay where people were displaced by floods.

Blantyre-based St Paul’s Anglican Church Saturday last week donated maize seeds worth over K500 000 (about $1 250) to 60 households in Nsanje.

Chingadzi Parish Paper Sunday raises K400 000

The faithful of Chingadzi Catholic Parish in the Archdiocese of Blantyre last Sunday organised a Paper Sunday from which they raised K400 000 (about $1 000) towards construction of a new priest’s house.

One of the organisers of the event, Venansio Chome, said it was necessary for the parishioners to be seen to be doing something about their plight before taking their begging bowl elsewhere.

Saint Mark Anglican Church last Sunday celebrated St Mark’s Day with patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre by donating several items to TB patients at the institution.

St Columba brings smiles to Ntcheu inmates

It was all smiles and ululation last Sunday when Saint Columba Welfare Committee visited Ntcheu Prison to donate to inmates.

The items, which included fish, soap and sugar, excited the inmates, especially when the visitors announced that the fish would be given to them directly without going through prison officials.

Nazarene launches development department

The Church of Nazarene in the South last Sunday launched the Development Department that seeks to empower women and the youth in the church economically, socially and spiritually.

General secretary of the Advisory Board of the church, Esther Mmangisa, said the church decided to set up the department to give members a platform for empowerment.

Angilican students save Dowa orphans

Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi, Reverend Francis Kaulanda, has commended the Society of Anglican Students Association (Sasa) for rescuing over 300 orphans in Dowa with a sanitation project aimed at preventing outbreaks of diseases.
