Mzimba First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Friday sentenced 37-year-old James Manzi of Kajawa Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mzukuzuku in the district to 30 months imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for intimidating his mother, Lorine Manzi (68).
Mzimba Police prosecutor Henry Mkweche told the court that on the night of May 2 this year, the convict threatened to kill his mother with a hoe handle, a spear and a club.
Mkweche said the convict demanded K85 000 from his mother as his payment for assisting in the construction of a family house.
The police prosecutor said the mother told the convict that she did not have any money on her and that he should wait for his brother who stays in Botswana to give him the money.
He said this angered the convict and he started intimidating his mother, saying that he would kill her if she did not comply with his orders.—Jonas Nyasulu, Correspondent
