Sulom fines Eagles keeper

Super League of Malawi has slapped Blue Eagles goalkeeper Duncan Mkandawire with a two match ban and a K50 000 (about $147) fine for beating Silver Strikers player Rodrick Gonani.
The incident happened on Sunday at the end of a Super League match between the two teams which Silver won 1-0, through Gonani’s goal.
Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said the punishment is automatic, without hearing.
“In line with Fifa Article 48, Duncan Mkandawire is suspended for two official matches and a fine of K50 000 (about $147) payable before Blue Eagles’ next game. Failure to pay the fine shall lead to forfeiture of points.
“As Sulom, we do not condone any form of violence at our games as that puts the game, the name of sponsors and Sulom in bad spotlight.
“This should be a warning to other teams that they should refrain from any kind of violence. Let us observe fair play at all the games and let football be the winner at the end of the day,” said Banda.
Silver had written an official complaint to Sulom regarding the matter.
“We are satisfied with the action taken by Sulom and that was really an unfortunate incident,” said Silver chairperson Dr McDonald Mafuta Mwale.
Eagles officials could not be reached for comment.
Sulom is still investigating alleged reports that Tigers coach Leo Mpulula was also involved in verbal infringement with referee Williams Maseko following his team’s 2-0 loss to Civo United on Sunday.
In a related development, Sulom has announced that fans will pay K500 (about $1.47) for the cordoned open stands at Kamuzu Stadium to watch Sunday’s Blantyre derby between Wanderers FC and Bullets FC.
