Presidential Cup surprise teams confident

Presidential Cup quarter-final surprise teams Chikhwawa United and Super Eagles have said they are optimistic about excelling in the competition this weekend.

Chikhwawa and Eagles are the only lower league sides that have made it to the quarter-finals of the competition.

To qualify for the last eight, Chikhwawa, who are coached by Davie Mpesi, stunned Blue Eagles with a 1-0 win whereas Super Eagles beat Kasungu Police 5-2.

Chikhwawa face Moyale at Chitowe in Dwangwa on Saturday and Mpesi said he is confident that his charges can pull another surprise.

“I am confident that if we approach the game the way we did against Blue Eagles, we should win on Saturday. The boys have displayed a lot of determination and character and I have no reason to doubt their capabilities,” said Mpesi.

Asked about the secret behind his team’s success, Mpesi said: “It has been about hard work and team spirit, that is all.”

Super Eagles, who will take on Red Lions, are also confident of sailing through.

Their coach James Phiri said: “It will be tough, but we are confident of progressing to the semis.”

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions manager Casper Jangale yesterday said the two teams’ qualification to the quarter-finals is confirmation that the tournament has provided thrills.
