Centre for community and youth development in Malawi (CCYD) has expressed worry over increased child marriages, saying this negatively affects national development in the country.

Executive chairperson for CCYD Weston Msowoya was speaking to members of the district executive committee in Salima on Thursday.

He said his organisation wants to implement a new project called ‘ending child marriages’ to promote girls’ social and economic empowerment

“Our primary goal is to ensure that young people realise their full potential in transforming and improving the quality of their lives, in partnership with other stakeholders.

“Therefore, our primary goal focuses on promoting youth participation through policy advocacy, youth enterprise development and sustainable livelihoods,” said Msowoya.

He said the project will be implemented in senior chief Kuluwunda’s area in Salima.

According to the 2008 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey,10.6 percent of children in Malawi, mostly girls, marry before the age of 15.
