‘Churches should promote good health’
The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in Zomba says it is high time the clergy played a vital role in ensuring that their families live a healthy life.
An officer of MVP Francis Mvundula said this recently during activities to mark the World Women’s Day of Prayers at Mwandama in Senior Chief Mlumbe in the district.
Mvundula urged the clergy to preach the significance of safe motherhood to their members to reduce maternal and child mortality.
“For a long time, men have been passive in health issues. The situation has led many households in the area to suffer from various health problems that could have been prevented had both men and women received appropriate information.
“It is our plea to the clergy to speak a lot on safe motherhood since they comprise a group of people with different backgrounds,” he said.
Nursing officer for Mwandama Health Centre, Faithrose Mawaya, hailed MVP for complementing government’s efforts in promoting good health in rural communities.
“We are happy with the effort that this organisation made in health issues affecting most rural areas in our district. This has helped many people in hard to reach areas to change their mindset on safe motherhood which has reduced under-five deaths in rural areas,” said Mawaya.
