Mikaya: Playing field should be levelled

A parliamentary contender for Blantyre City West Constituency Steve Mikaya has described the May 2014 Tripartite Elections as an election that will give the youth a chance.

Mikaya, an independent candidate, said in an interview last week whichever way the election would go, the youth will be the winner.

He claimed the battle for votes nationwide is among the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the governing People’s Party (PP), adding that how the political parties would conduct their campaigns in the remaining few months would determine the winner.

Mikaya said: “But what excites me about this tripartite elections, especially at presidential level, is that whoever wins, will do it for the youth of Malawi.

“If the UDF presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi wins, the youth have won, if it is DPP whose running mate is the youthful Saulos Chilima or PP whose running mate is another youth Sosten Gwengwe, it remains an election for the youth.”

The candidate said he may not have problems if MCP carries the day because the Lazarus Chakwera and Richard Msowoya team is not old.

Mikaya said the youth must be excited by the prospect of participating in the elections instead of being used by politicians to perpetrate violence.

“Whichever party we belong to, let us unite as youths and conduct ourselves in a civil manner. For once, let the May polls be violent-free in respect of the youth that have appeared on the presidential ballot. They represent us all.”
