‘Faith leaders should be exemplary’

United Religions Initiative (URI), an international interfaith network active in 78 countries, has urged religious leaders in the country to go beyond the pulpit and make a difference in people’s lives.

Pastor Alex Business, who is URI chairperson, said this recently in Bangwe, Blantyre, when he led the group in a cleaning exercise in the township.

“We also had a sanitation awareness campaign when we were going door to door telling people to avoid disposing of litter carelessly,” said Business.

The exercise was part of a project the group is implementing with a $1 500 grant from the Environmental Satellite Cooperation Circle based in USA.

“We decided to conduct the exercise on December 1 because we wanted to encourage people living with HIV and Aids to be in the forefront promoting sanitation. We believe that good sanitation will result in good health,” said Business.

The cleaning exercise was held under the theme ‘Restoring Sanitary Conditions and Environment.’
