‘Genetrix Zambia trip vital’
Hockey Association of Malawi president Tochi Gill says Genetrix Hockey Club’s trip to Zambia late this month will be of great importance to the rebuilding of the national team.
The Malawi national hockey team is set to make international comeback after 18 years with games against Zimbabwe later this year.
Gill made the remarks when his company, Monolux Paints, donated K50 000 (about $119) worth of fuel for the trip.
He said the international exposure Genetrix will get in Lusaka will be shared with other players back home.
“It has been a while since Malawi played international hockey. Now, we want to make a comeback in September.
“With most players not having international experience, Genetrix exposure in Lusaka will give the players an insight into what it takes to play international games.
“Last year, the team failed to travel to Zambia for the Africa Club Championship due to funds. We do not want them to miss this chance again. That is why I have come in to assist and let others also assist the team to ensure we promote the game,” Gill said.
Genetrix general secretary Herbert Nkhoma expressed gratitude to Gill.
“He has always supported us and we will ensure that we do well when we go to Lusaka as a thank you to him and other companies that will help us,” he said.
A contingent of 40 people—18 players for both boys and girls teams and four officials—is expected to leave by road to Lusaka on May 22 and return on May 27.
The trip’s budget has been pegged at K 1.1 million (about $2 619)
