‘Malawi coaches jealous’

Former Flames and Big Bullets coach Eddingtone Ng’onamo has cited jealousy as an evil that is derailing football coaching on the domestic scene.

Ng’onamo said this in his capacity as the lead instructor for a FAM C Licence coaching course whose graduation took place Saturday morning at the BAT ground.

The course ran from December 3 to 13 2013 at Saint Andrew’s International High School.

“They do not want to see others progress. Let us support each other. Referees meet regularly and share knowledge, but that is not the case with coaches. We need to share the knowledge as football is dynamic. Others are still using 3-5-2 system which is gone. Now it is 4-2-3-1 or

4-4-2,” Ng’onamo said in front of 55 coaches who obtained the C licence.

FAM hired Ng’onamo as Flames head coach mid last year, but eventually demoted him to Belgian Tom Saintfiet’s deputy before dropping him completely.

“Football is result-oriented. If you do well, they pick you; if not, they kick you out. They want results now. That is the mentality of fans in Malawi. Go and educate the fans that in football you cannot always win,” observed Ng’onamo who is a high school teacher.

He added that there was a need for a new generation of coaches, but for that to happen, the up-and-coming trainers need proper teaching skills.

“Remember football is a running, passing, thinking and shooting game. Teaching the basics is very important. Others join the national team without knowledge of the basics. You need to teach them the roles of each playing position. To do that, start from the grass roots. Do not

rush,” he explained.

The course, which covered medicine, laws of the game, theory and practicals, attracted 57 coaches and had 55 students passing with former Flames captain Peter Monda the best on 95 percent passing mark.

Two unnamed aspiring coaches flopped in the course that saw little-known AlinaneGobede came second to Mponda, followed on third place by ex-Silver Strikers’ Mike Banda. Anderson Kamanga, James Sangala (former Flames defender), Davie Tembo, Clement Kafwafwa (ex-Malawi international), Arthur Nthala and Enos Chatama followed on four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and 10th positions respectively. Graduands Samuel Kandeya and Tembo described the course as an eye-opener.

The course participants donated K7 100—which they contributed among themselves — to bed-ridden former Azam Tigers coach Leo Mpulula.

Guest of honourGomezganiZakazaka urged the participants to use the qualification and start from the grass roots coaching youth teams instead of rushing for Super League jobs.
