Every year, primary schools in Lilongwe compete in traditional dancing and singing at an event called ‘Hear Us Youth Festival’ which Music Crossroads organises.

The successful school contributes five pupils who join other five youths from Music Crossroads Academy to form a group called Hear Us Children Musical.

The group travels to Spain for a three-week visit the following year.

In 2015, Khamula Primary School triumphed in the competition; hence, the impending tour of Spain.

Headmistress at Khamula Primary School, Getrude Nyondo, says the five pupils who are going to Spain worked hard in class because the school administration made it clear that those who would not do well in examination would not be picked for the trip.

Some of the music activities the pupils engage in are traditional dances such as manganje, beni, chisamba, ching’ande and gwanyasa.

Music Crossroads executive director Gayighayi Mathews Mfune says many pupils are not familiar with traditional music hence the programme aims at letting the pupils appreciate music that their grandparents used to play and enjoy.
