The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Peter Banda, 28, to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for defiling a nine-year-old child.

Banda, who has been in police custody since January this year, committed the offence on 5th and 6th December last year.

Police prosecutor Kephas Mwangonde said Banda was living in the same brick fenced compound as the child’s parents in Area 36.

“The first day of the defilement, the girl, a Standard Five pupil, came home from school and found her house locked because her mother was at a supermarket. Banda took her aside and raped her,” said Mwangonde.

She said the next day Banda did the same when the child’s parents were also away and threatened her not to say anything to her parents.

However, the parents noticed a change of behaviour and that she change and noticed that she had difficulties walking.

“It was at this time that the child revealed she had been raped two times. Results confirmed the rape incident, which led to the arrest of Banda,” said Mwangonde.

She said Banda, who is serving his sentence at Maula Prison comes from Chiyendausiku Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka.
