102 boxers register for Maba online tourney

About 102 boxers have registered for an online boxing competition organised by Malawi Boxing Association (Maba).

The regional tournaments, which started on Tuesday, will also be qualifiers for the national championship.

Out of 102 boxers registered, 10 are from the Northern Region, 51 from the Southern Region and 42 are from the Central Region.

In the competition, boxers are required to send video clips displaying boxing skills for judges to assess and determine the winners.

In an interview on Monday, Maba vice-president Francis Kadzakalowa said the competition has received a good response from the regions.

“We are expecting a good competition looking at the number of boxers that have been registered,” he said.

Prizes will be given to best five boxers starting at regional level.

Each region will select five boxers; hence, 15  boxers expected to compete at national level.

Northern Region Boxing Committee chairperson Wezzie Mayiza said they have confidence in the 10 boxers the region has registered for the competition.

“The 10 that we have registered are those that are always active in the sport. We expect a good display from them and we are optimistic that one of them will earn a national title,” he said.

Among the boxers registered for the  tournament are Harvey Nkacha [not the footballer], Snowden Munyanje and Yamikani Mtambo.

Other names are Abdull Chitepete, Elias Bonzo, Daniel Lombora, Bwanali Magalasi, Hanock Phiri, Kassim Elias in the men’s category while the female boxers include  Mphatso Metaudzu, Charity  Chiwa, Natasha Maya and Wezie Kataika.

Speaking in an interview, Nkacha commended Maba for the competition, saying it will go a long way in keeping them active in the sport.
