Kondowe (C) presents a dummy cheque to Gill (2nd L) as other officials look on: FMB Hockey sponsorship

The K1.2million FMB Hockey League will be launched this Sunday at Blantyre Sports Club and a feast of at least 13 six-aside league matches has been put on the table to grace the occasion.

Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) vice-general secretary Wanthaza Mughogho said yesterday the event will have six men’s B league matches, four premier division games and three women’s league encounters that will begin from 10am.

He said this has been done deliberately in order to have ample time for other forthcoming local and international engagements such as the FMB 11-aside league in October and the African Club Championships in either Egypt or Kenya in November.

“It would really appear unusual to have such a number of games within a day but that is a deliberate plan that would help us finish our fixtures within schedule. We were supposed to start a new league season for the six-aside league over a month ago and we are running against time,” he said.

He said the six-aside league, which will consume 40 percent of the sponsorship, will run up to end of September.

According to Mughogho, just after the launching ceremony, Sports Complex Simba will take on Genetrix Ladies. Later on the day, Genetrix Ladies will be up against Scorpions before Nyala Ladies tussle against Genetrix Ladies 2.

In the men’s B Division, there will be battles involving Genetrix B and Scorpions, Braves versus Nyala, Changalume and Scorpions, Cobbe and Braves, Genetrix B against Braves and Nyala versus Cobbe Barracks.

Scorpions, Nyala, Braves and Falcons will each have 30-minute tussles against Falcons, Braves, Genetrix and Braves in the men’s Premier Division.
