Lunyangwa Primary School pupil, Cathy Phiri, 14, won the first prize in the three-month competition after opening an account last week in which she deposited the money willed to her by her father.

Runner-up Cifa Chatsika took home an upright refrigerator while Fatima Yoyola took home a cooker on behalf of her third-placed husband who is recuperating from a fractured leg sustained in a road accident.

The first prize winner, speaking through her guardian, said she was happy to see the savings bring her the prized possession.

However, the most emotional acceptance came from the Yoyolas who thanked the bank for giving them something to smile about amid the agony her husband is going through.

She said: “It is exciting to win such a fabulous cooker, but these are very trying times for us. I don’t know how to celebrate this with my husband is still on the sickbed?”

Targeting both old and new customers in NBS Bank’s 32 branches across the country, the competition only required customers to save K15 000 ($35) a month to stand a chance win.

Mzuzu senior service centre manager Tryson Kalanda said the competition has helped expanding its customer base and reach.
