15 pass chess instructors’ course

Chess should now flourish in more schools. Thanks to 15 participants who passed a Chess in School (CiS) trainers’ course held at Capital City Motel, Lilongwe from November 16-18.

The 15, drawn from all regions and Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa), are now qualified to teach chess in schools and train students. They can also train teachers to teach chess in schools, said Chess Association of Malawi general secretary Leonard Sharra.

“This is a major milestone in the development of chess in Malawi as more students will learn how to play chess and enhance their schools. Fide will send equipment in the form of chess sets and teaching manuals to be used by the trainers,” Sharra said in a statement during the week.

International Chess Federation, through its lecturer Kevin O’Connell, administered the course which some participants passed.

The CiS seminar run concurrently with the Fide Trainers Seminar involving the same 15 participants 11 of whom passed from November 16-17 at the same venue.

The 15 who passed are Alfred Chimthere, Grace Khupara, Joseph Chalemba, Ackim Mwale, Makhosi Nyirenda, Magaret Ngugama, Petros Mfune, Alfred Kabaghe, LeonardSharra, Victor Mjojo, Leonard Mbwana, Moses Mphande, Chimwemwe Lumbani, Kissinger Kabuluzi and Niall Dorey.
