Sixteen (16) people sustained serious injuries yesterday after a mini bus they were travelling in overturned at Ludzi Turn-off on the Mchinji-Lilongwe M12 road at around 11:45 am.

Eye witnesses said the minibus, a Toyota Hiace registration BM 7835, was heading to Lilongwe and overturned after its driver, Jonas Somanje, attempted to overtake a truck. The witnesses said the driver lost control of the vehicle in the process.

The victims were referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) from Mchinji District Hospital.

Hospital sources said Mchinji District Hospital has no X-ray machine; hence, it was difficult to treat the patients because most of them sustained fractures. The district hospital only attended to minor injuries.

Mchinji district health officer (DHO) Chimwemwe Banda told Malawi News Agency (Mana) said the hospital has referred all the 16 patients to KCH on three ambulances and two vehicles.

Mchinji Police Station spokesperson Moses Kajawa Nyirenda confirmed the accident and said police were investigating circumstances that led to the accident.

He said: “Contrary to information spreading around, no one has died. But all 16 people, including the driver, sustained serious injuries.” n
