Mkwezalamba shot The Designer two years ago at the age of 15, making her the youngest movie director in the country.

The movie was screened at the Silicone Valley African Film Festival in the US in 2013.

In an interview, the now 17-year-old said she loves acting, but her mentor Tawonga Nkhonjera, who is director of Dikamawoko, encouraged her to try directing.

“I want to send this movie to as many festivals as I can and it is my wish that I take directing professionally,” said Mkwezalamba, who also starred in Nkhonjera’s B’ella.

She said that now she would like to concentrate on her studies, but will eventually venture in full-time filmmaking after graduating from Blantyre International University (BIU) where she is in the final year of a banking and finance degree.

The movie premiere will be supported by performances by Fredokiss and Mafo and has been financially sponsored by Nyasa Films. n
