Speaking in an interview, Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust environmental education and communications officer Kondwani Chamwala said the group was heading towards Dziwe la Nkhalamba when the girl started complaining of short of breath and collapsed.

“She was rushed to Mulanje District Hospital where she was pronounced dead,” said Chamwala, who also dispelled beliefs that the death is connected to ‘spirits’ from the mountain.

According to Chamwala, the body has now been taken to the deceased’s home in Ntcheu for burial.

Mulanje Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira said he was yet to gather details on the matter.
