Mulanje District has set aside over 2.5 million tree seedlings to be planted across the district to help curb deforestation and preserve the environment.

In an interview with the Malawi News Agency yesterday, district forestry officer Lemos Mlaviwa said they are yet to set the date to start the tree-planning exercise.

Trees reduce the effects of climate change

He urged people in the district to plant trees to conserve the environment, saying many trees are consumed than replaced.

Said Mlaviwa: “It is my humble plea to the people in the district to take advantage of the rains by planting trees because assurance that they are going to survive is there.

Mlaviwa said the tree-planting exercise will target river banks and also the Mulanje Mountain catchment area to ensure that the beauty of the district is restored.

He said Blantyre Water Board (BWB) will take care of the trees to be planted on the mountain as they promised to cover 520 hectares of land on the mountain in nine years starting with 40 hectares during this year’s tree -planting season which runs from December to April every year. n
