Two suspected criminals in Lirangwe, Blantyre, have been arrested for impersonating police officers, police have confirmed.

According to Southern Region Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani, the two allegedly went to one of the business tycoons in the area in the early hours of yesterday, demanding money.

However, the businessperson got suspicious and alerted the people from the vicinity who came to the scene.

The two suspects were rescued by police from angry residents who wated to burn them

The suspects attempted to run away, but were later apprehended by the people who wanted to burn them alive.

Police officers later rushed to the scene and whisked them away.

In an interview yesterday, Mushani said investigations are underway.

“I can confirm that arrests have been made indeed of the two suspected criminals who went to one of the businessperson’s house in Lirangwe and pretended that they were police officers, demanding money from him. But as of now, we do not have names of the two suspects and the businessperson as investigations are still ongoing,” he said.

Mushani further said once investigations have been concluded the two will appear in court to answer charges of impersonating public officers. n
