Two cyclists—Stewart Kambewa, 32, and Kwame Kayira,34—have cycled from Marka in Nsanje to Kanyala in Chitipa and back to Blantyre to raise funds for drilling nine boreholes nationwide.

They left Nsanje on October 1 and arrived in Chitipa on October 10 before starting off on the return leg on October 11 and arrived in Blantyre on October 15 where officials from Water for People and New Restoration Plan Malawi welcomed them.

Water for People country director Kate Harawa said her organisation will help in management of the boreholes once they are drilled.

“We will provide training to the villagers where the boreholes will be drilled so that they are well managed,” she said.

New Restoration Plan Malawi country director George Chaima commended the cyclists, saying the provision of clean and safe water is everyone’s responsibility.

Kambewa said they are in good health despite cycling a long distance.

The two cycled under Clean Water Cycle Initiative dubbed Cycle 999. The boreholes will be drilled in Nsanje, Mulanje, Balaka, Dedza, Dowa, Salima, Mzimba, Nkhata Bay and Karonga. n
