According to the police and Chancellor College Registrar’s Office the deceased, who were studying Bachelor of Arts in Humanities are Pilirani Chonde,19, from Chikumba Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chaza in Lilongwe and Anthony Kambauwa from Ntcheu District.

Eastern Region Headquarters police publicist, Inspector Thomeck Nyaude, identified the other injured students as Dingiswayo Moyo, Winnie Ndovie, Mirriam Nyirongo and four others who were not yet identified because they are in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Zomba Central Hospital.

Nyaude added that the accident happened around 3am when the victims were driving back to Chanco from unknown place.Accident

He said that the victims who were nine in number were driving in a Toyota Corolla registration number MC5313 which is a five seater car.

According to Nyaude the driver of the car was cruising and lost control, a situation which led to the vehicle to overturn.

However, according to the eye witness who was awake at the time of the accident and witnessed it, the car hit a pole near her house and overturned several times.

Both the witness who asked for anonymity and the police said the victims were nine in total and seemed to be under the influence of alcohol as they had bottles of beer in the car.

Meanwhile, police have appealed to the general public to observe speed limit in Zomba as there is congestion in the city’s roads following rehabilitation work that is under way on the Zomba Road.
