2 jailed 20 years for defilement

Mzimba Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two men to 20 years imprisonment for defiling a 15-year-old girl.

Northern Region Police deputy spokesperson Maurice Chapola said the pair was convicted on Friday after they defiled the girl on November 15 2020 within the district.

The court heard through State prosecutor Jennifer Chawinga that one of the convicts, the victim’s neighbour, invited her into his vehicle at a certain trading centre in the district.

“Immediately the other convict boarded the vehicle, it sped off into a forest,” she said.
The two denied the charge, but the State paraded six witnesses and proved its case.

In her submission, Chawinga prayed for stiffer punishment, saying the two committed a serious crime which attracts life imprisonment.
The two prayed for leniency, saying they were breadwinners for their families.

But senior resident magistrate Mathews Msika dismissed the convicts’ pleas and handed them 20 years each.
He described the two as a danger to society; hence, the need to imprison them. n
