Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (Elds) has installed solar power to Chambala Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) library and constructed 15 toilets at Chambala Primary School in Traditional Authority Njombwa in Kasungu District.

In an interview on Tuesday, the organisation’s Kasungu project manager Benjamin Kasinja said they learned that learners at Chambala CDSS were failing to study at night due to lack of electricity.

“As for the primary school, we wanted to enhance its hygiene and sanitation to motivate children to go to school,” he said.

Kasungu acting district education manager Owen Mwale commended the organisation for the initiatives.

He said: “We know that electricity is essential to studies, but most CDSSs in Kasungu have no electricity, which affects students’ performance.

“We also thank the organisation for constructing modern toilets at Chambala Primary School as the facilities will create a conducive learning environment.”

Elds, a development arm of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Malawi, implemented the two initiatives to the tune of K86 million from a German-based Engineers Without Borders.

The organisation has also pledged to install digital facilities at the library this September with support from Next Generation Africa.
