200 athletes register for Cape Maclear Triathlon

The first ever TNM-sponsored Cape Maclear Triathlon has received an overwhelming response with over 200 athletes registering to take part.

The heat is slated for September 18 to 20 in Mangochi District.triathlon

Jam Kaunda of Mizu Foundation, who are coordinating the triathlon, said all is set for the event which has attracted participants from different sporting disciplines.

“We have over 200 athletes registered in   different disciplines,” he said.

Kaunda said games will include a 20-kilometre race for athletics, cycling, volleyball, football, swimming and canoe rowing.

“We expect this to be a well-received event, one that has never happened before on the shores of Lake Malawi let alone in Cape Maclear. We are expecting a lot of people as well to come and support the athletes or just to relax and enjoy the sporting fun on the beach,” he said.

Kaunda hailed TNM for supporting the foundation towards hosting of the event.

“We would like to thank TNM for the Support and we hope to continue this relationship into the future as we aim to raise even more awareness for more amazing charitable organisation that we want to support through sport,” Kaunda said.

TNM has pumped in K8 million for the event.

TNM public relations and sponsorship manager Limbani Nsapato said TNM is proud to partner Mizu Foundation for the event.

“It is exciting to note that in future Mizu Foundation wants to grow Triathlon to another level that will attract international athletes. This will help sell Malawi’s tourism to the outside world,” he said.

Other activities to support and spice up the Triathlon games include pre-fancy dress party, kids mini triathlon, fun run and sun downers on a boat.

Other sponsors of the event include DHL, Carlsberg Malawi Limited, The Living Room and Annie’s Lodge.
