Police in Malawi have said more people have died during the 2012 Christmas season compared to 2011.

Police national spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said in an interview on Thursday, 10 road accidents and 10 deaths were recorded between December 24 and 26 2012 whereas nine road accidents and five deaths were recorded in 2011.

Manjolo said the Southern Region reported the most fatal accident where four people died in Limbe, Blantyre.

“The Northern and Eastern regions reported one death each while the Central Region reported four fatal accidents and four deaths. All the recorded road accidents were due to over-speeding and since the festive season is not yet over, we should be more careful when driving to reduce deaths and injuries.

“The traffic police will be patrolling all areas to ensure that motorists are travelling while sober and at the required speed. With the rains, road accidents are more prone, so speed limits should be observed,” said Manjolo.
