Mangochi will have an early Mother’s Day celebrations this morning as representatives from Nation Publications Limited (NPL) and its Mother’s Fun Run project brave a two-kilometre distance to raise funds for Mangochi District Hospital and its health centres.

Mother’s Fun Run, as the name implies, is a social run by NPL whose aim is to raise funds for the purchase of medical equipment for maternity wings of public hospitals.

NPL chief executive officer Mbumba Banda— who will lead the run together with parliamentary Health Committee chairperson Juliana Lunguzi, UNFPA and Unicef country representatives, among others,—said Mother’s Fun Run is NPL’s way of ploughing back to society for supporting its business.

This year, Mother’s Fun Run is scheduled to start at 7.30am from Ayiche Wosope (which is close to a mini-forest as one approaches Mangochi Boma) to the district commissioner’s (DC) office.

Mother’s Fun Run project coordinator Herbert Chagunda said the initiative is one of NPL’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) designed to promote safe motherhood through provision of oxygen concentrators, blood pressure machines, suction machines, resuscitators and others to public hospitals.

Mother’s Fun Run started in 2005 with Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) as the first beneficiary and to date, about eight district hospitals have so far benefitted.
