22 netted in Salima sweeping exercise

Police in Salima have arrested 22 people in a sweeping exercise.

Salima Police Station spokesperson Gift Chitowe said the exercise was aimed at reducing crime ahead of the Christmas and New Year festive season.

“We conducted the exercise to reduce crime rates in the district and such exercises are to continue throughout the entire festive period,” he said.

He assured the general public not to panic, saying the law enforcers will track down criminals.

Chitowe said some of those arrested might have been involved in crimes like theft, earning a living through prostitution, possessing Indian hemp as well as rogue and vagabond.

Through the exercise, the law enforcers managed to recover one cow and two bags of Indian hemp weighing about 47 kilogrammes.

Those arrested, who include 18 males and four females, will appear before court soon to answer relevant charges. n
