Twenty five models from across Africa and beyond have expressed interest to take part in the inaugural Malawi Fashion Week (MFW).

Elegant Resources and African Dzuwa, a lifestyle magazine will hold the inaugural fashion event from May 30 to June 03, 2013 at Umodzi Park in the capital, Lilongwe.

As gearing up for the inaugural MFW continues, organisers have announced that shortlisting of international models will be done this week but so far 25 have submitted portfolios.

“Apart from two Zambian models that were picked during the first audition, there are 25 models from outside Malawi who have applied. 11 from Botswana, Zambia 5, South Africa, 2, with Belgium, Gabon, Ghana, Mozambique, Tanzania, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe registering one model,” said MFW public relations manager Kimpho Hastings Loka.

Commenting on the second round of auditions for local models that took place on Saturday at Crossroads Hotel, Loka said 11 have been successful.

“Among the 11 models selected, 7 are female and 4 are male. Organisers saw the need to add more models as the number was not complementing with that of designers who have applied.

“Close to 40 designers from Malawi and other countries have registered to participate at the MFW 2013,” he said.

There are now 38 local models that have made it on the final list and they will be joined by their counterparts from other countries after shortlisting.

Meanwhile, MFW has organised two sessions of boot camp one in April and the other in May two weeks before the fashion week.

The boot camps will be hosted for both local and international models.
