3 Nabbed over counterfeit notes

Kanengo Police on Monday arrested three men for allegedly possessing counterfeit K2 000 notes totalling K384 000, contravening Section 382 of the Penal Code.

Kanengo Police Station spokesperson Laban Makalani said police were tipped off that some people were in possession of fake bank notes at Area 50 and a special team was sent to investigate.

Police are advising the public to check security features on the K2 000 notes

The accused have been identified as Precious Kathyanga, 35; Chikondano Phiri, 27; and Chipiliro Phiri, 19. The three come from Traditional Authority  Kabudula in Lilongwe District.

He said: “Police detectives from Kanengo arrested the suspects on Monday at a drinking joint in Area 50. During the time of the arrest, the three were buying drinks with the fake notes.”

Makalani said the team recovered the counterfeit notes bearing the same serial number AA7750735 and the accused pleaded guilty.

Police are appealing to the public for more information about money laundering.

Meanwhile, police have asked the general public to check relevant security features on bank notes regularly. n
