At least 32 bodybuilders have registered for the 2016 Mr. Zomba Bodybuilding Championship scheduled for this December at Pajokala Lodge.

However, organiser of the annual event, Bright Limani, who is also chairperson for Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (Wbam) Eastern Region Chapter, said the number of athletes will be trimmed to 15.

“Not everybody qualifies for the competition because contestants need to have the standard prerequisites such as a balanced muscle structure from head to toe.

“Therefore, the 32 registered individuals will undergo a screening process to come up with a final list of 15 bodybuilders,” he said.

According to Limani, the competition is expected to cost K1 million.

So far, Pajokala Lodge has contributed K325 000 while Fumbani Hardware and the organising committee have pumped in K175 000 and K173 000, respectively.

“We are still talking with three other prospective sponsors and we will be finalising our discussions soon,” he said.

This is the fourth edition of the competition.

Morton Mhango is the defending champion whereas Thoko Kakhongwe and Emmanuel Binauli won the 2014 and 2013 contests, in that order. n
