Malawi’s crusade towards the pan-African Airtel Rising Stars (ARS) in Gabon next month has begun with 32 players —comprising 16 girls and 16 boys—shortlisted into the national select squad.

According to Airtel’s Emmanuel Kaunda, the national select is expected to go into camp as soon as administrative logistics are completed.

“Right now, we are commencing the procession of travel documents for the boys and girls. We should be getting into camp a week or two before departure for Gabon,” said Kaunda.

He further revealed that Thom Mkorongo and Severia Chalira had been chosen as coach and team manager respectively for the girls team whilst coach for the boys is Benjamin Kumwenda and Innocent Kaundulu is the team manager.

Meanwhile, the boy and girl whose skills reigned supreme over the rest of the players during the national finals of the Airtel Rising Stars (ARS) have been given individual prize money.

Abel Mwakilama and Temwa Chawinga from Moyale Boys and New Version Girls respectively pocketed MK50, 000 cash each for emerging best players of the tourney.

This is the first time for Malawi to assemble a national select team to feature in the ARS pan-African tourney.
