Thirty-seven women in Neno District have expressed interest to contest in the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections as members of Parliament (MPs) and councillors.

This was revealed on Thursday when 50-50 Campaign Management Agency visited the district to encourage women to participate in the elections.

Joyce Kachale from Neno North Constituency said people’s past representatives let them down on unfulfilled promises.

“I decided to get early retirement as primary education adviser [PEA] to contest as an MP because there are many social needs such as roads, boreholes and schools that were neglected,” she said.

Twenty-one-year old Madalitso Chilekwa, who wants to contest as councillor for Chilimbondo Ward, said she will promote youth-friendly projects without leaving out men, women and children.

The agency’s team leader, Viwemi Chavula, encouraged women to contest as MPs, councillors and even President.

He said there are few women in Parliament, councils and Cabinet because many of them do not show interest in political activities.

The agency has sub-contracted Ligowe Community Development Organisation to assist women in Mwanza and Neno attain political leadership.

The subcontracted organisation’s executive director, Henry Machemba, said they will assist the women in different areas including public speaking and development and implementation of campaign strategies and manifestos.
