Four women died in the central Malawi district of Dedza this week after a large hole they made in the ground collapsed on them.

Dedza Police spokesperson Edward Kabango said on Wednesday, the four were digging earth to decorate their homes when the accident happened.

“Reports show that the four left their homes at around 10 am, but five hours later, one of the children raised the alarm after she went to check at the site. She found the cave had collapsed and the bodies trapped,” he said.

The four have been identified as 48-year-old Everest Chilemwe from Chauma Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chauma; Esme Sefutala (32) from Biwirira Village, T/A Chauma and the other two, Zakiya Abi, 35, and Mariam Muchande, 30, from Kachulu Village, T/A Tambala in the district.

Kabango said this is not the first time for such an accident to happen in Dedza.
