The Midima Magistrate’s Court in Limbe on Monday freed on bail five suspects allegedly linked to DPP Youth Cadets accused of carrying offensive weapons without authority or reasonable excuse on July 19 2011.

The five, arrested on July 17 2012, remained in police custody at Limbe Police Station after the State successfully made an application at the court to have them remanded up to July 23, last Monday, on the basis that investigations were still underway.

The five pleaded not guilty on July 17 before they got a lawyer. The court on that day made an order that they be brought to court last Monday to be dealt with according to the law, but the State did not turn up and did not bring the five to court.

Private practice lawyer Sheen Msusa made a bail application for the five, which magistrate Mangawa Makhalira, in accordance with powers conferred in him, granted in the absence of the police on condition that they deposit K30 000 each cash.

They met the bail conditions and were released. The case comes at Midima Magistrate’s Court for hearing on August 13 depending on the State’s readiness.

The five, suspected to be Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Youth Cadets,  are Robert Panya Banda, Doya Makondetsa, Charles Yotamu, Danex Phiri and a woman, Pilirani Mzunga.
