Five people died on the spot while 10 others sustained injuries after a minibus they were travelling in overturned in the M1 at Nathenje in Lilongwe.
Nathenje Health Centre medical technician in-charge Gloria Chikoko said in an interview the five were brought to her facility while already dead. She said three of the dead were male and two females, including an under-five girl.
She said: “The five arrived at our facility while they were already dead. Eight of the victims were critically injured while two suffered minor injuries.”
Chikoko said the injured persons were referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) for further medical attention.
“Some had internal injuries while others had fractures,” she said.
Central Region Police spokesperson Norrieti Chihana said one of the minibus tyres burst, leading to the overturning of the mini bus registration ZA 634.
Eyewitness Alex Kuwakuwa, a motorcycle taxi operator, said the minibus was coming from Dedza direction going to Lilongwe.
He said he saw the minibus overturning a couple of times.
