5 die in road accidents

Five People have been killed in two separate road accidents in Chiradzulu and Mzuzu.

In Chiradzulu, at least two people, a driver and a passenger, were killed while two others were admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) intensive care unit after a Toyota Hiace registration BR 5577 they were travelling in overturned near Njuli quarry along the Zomba-Blantyre Road following a tyre burst on Thursday.

accidentAccording to Chiradzulu Police’s traffic report, the accident occurred at around 7:30am on Thursday as the minibus was driving from Mangochi to Blantyre.

The driver was identified as Brena Bosom, 35, of Pensulo Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikowi in Zomba while  the deceased passenger was yet to be identified.

The report says the minibus, with a capacity of 16, was at the time of the accident carrying 19 people. The report adds that following the bursting of left rear tyre, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve to the opposite lane.

In Mzuzu, three people died and one has been seriously injured after being hit by a lorry.

Mzuzu Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola yesterday  identified two of the deceased as Mary Phiri, 13, of Makhuwira Village in the area of Senior Chief Mtwalo in Mzimba and Queen Ndlovu. The third person, a male who was cycling at the time of the accident, is yet to be identified.

The police are since looking for the driver of the lorry.
