There was jubilation on Thursday in Salima when professional boxers Alick Mwenda, Wilson Masamba, Osgood Kayuni, Chrispin Moliati and Chimwemwe Chiotcha completed their six-month military training at the Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima.

All the five have been posted to the Army headquarters in Lilongwe.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Body (MPBCB) president Lonzoe Zimba and his general secretary Daudi Chikwanje were in Salima to witness the graduation of the boxers.

“It is a great honour for boxing in the country. They persevered and maintained discipline to complete the training. It is not an easy thing to complete military training, that is why we are so proud of them,” said Zimba.

He thanked MDF for giving the boxers an opportunity to get employment in the army.

Chikwanje said he was delighted that the boxers are based in Lilongwe where MPBCB secretariat is.

A senior military officer, who chose not to be named, also praised the boxers.

“They have been disciplined and I think they will make good soldiers,” said the officer.

In an interview, Moliati said the training has instilled discipline in him, which he said is an important aspect for one to be a successful boxer.

“I think now I am a better boxer than before. I thank MDF for giving me the opportunity to be a soldier and at the same time to pursue my career as a boxer,” said Moliati.
