55 pupils awarded for hard work

That hard work pays came true for 55 pupils in the southern Malawi district of Mwanza on Tuesday when the Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) gave them school materials.

Eight best performing students (two from each form) and three best science female pupils were chosen from each of the schools: Mwanza Secondary School and Thambani, Thawale, Mphande and Chidoole community day secondary schools.

The winning students received bags, scientific calculators, mathematical instruments and writing materials.

Camfed executive director Angeline Murimiwa said the initiative has helped to keep pupils in school.

“It is our dream that every child is educated, valued and protected to grow and turn the tide of poverty with education. Many children fail to go to school because of poverty and for some parents education is a luxury they can forgo,” said Murimiwa.

South West Education Division (Swed) manager Eunice Dambo hailed Camfed for the efforts. She said apart from providing bursaries to 74 pupils in six districts, the gesture has retained students.
