Fifty-five bodybuilders have registered for the inaugural Ulayaclassic following the pre-judging exercise ahead of the competition slated for September 17.
Charles Ulaya, sponsor of the event, said they scouted for talent in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu.
The former Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (WBAM) president said he is overwhelmed by the response from the bodybuilders.
“The pre-judging was aimed at examining the bodybuilders to see how fit they are and determine if between now and September, they will be fit to compete in the Ulayaclassics,” said Ulaya.
There will also be a ladies category which will be on voluntary basis.
“The ladies also need to be fit. They have not been left out. They will have their own category,” said the tournament’s director Darlingtone Ndasauka.
Meanwhile, Ulaya Classics has introduced another element in which the sponsor appoints individuals to participate in daily exercise.
Ulaya said the element is aimed at encouraging not only bodybuilders, but also the general public to participate in exercise.
So far, Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya, MP Noel Masangwi and Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson James Chuma have been nominated.
Msowoya accepted the challenge and posted videos on Facebook of himself exercising.
He said: “Today, I decided to take up the Ulayaclassic daily fitness challenge initiated by Charles Ulaya who has taken the initiative to challenge fellow Malawians to lead a healthy and disciplined life. I feel honoured that he nominated me for this daily fitness challenge. I am happy to accept the challenge and, as you can see from the videos, I take it very seriously.
“I do so because this challenge is in line with what we must all be doing. Exercises help us keep fit both mentally and physically apart from giving us the opportunity to relax.”
He has since extended the Ulayaclassic fitness challenge to Balaka Central MP Lucius Banda and Dedza East MP Juliana Lunguzi. n
