6 die in CZ road accident

Six people died On Saturday while others sustained serious injuries in the wee hours of on Saturday when a minibus collided with a truck at Chamtengo Village, between Mbulumbuzi and Njuli Trading Centre on Zomba Road.

In an interview on Saturday , Chiradzulu Police spokesperson Innocent Moses identified the minibus driver as Yusuf Abas, 42, of Kalonga Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mponda in Mangochi.

He said Abas was driving the Toyota Hiace registration KK5743 from Zomba to Limbe with passengers on board and upon arrival at Chimtengo Village, he tried to overtake the truck registration MZ4846, driven by Justin Masamba, 49, from Mponda Village, T/A Chiwalo, Phalombe.

Said Moses: “While overtaking, he saw another vehicle from the opposite direction and to avoid a head-on collision, the driver swerved to his offside lane where the minibus rammed into the rear end of the truck.”

The police spokesperson said four men and two women were pronounced dead on arrival at Chiradzulu District Hospital while those seriously injured were admitted to Zomba General Hospital. Abas sustained a cut on the forehead and is in hospital.
