7 die in Dowa road accident

Seven people have died and several others injured in a road accident that occurred on Monday at Katengeza Trading Centre in Dowa.

According to Central East Region police publicist Harry Namwaza, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace registration number NB 6484 which was coming from the direction of Kaphatenga heading towards Mvera along Salima – Lilongwe M14 road. It had eighteen passengers on board.

“Upon arrival at Katengeza Trading Centre the rear side tyre burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle due to speeding and swerved to the extreme off-side where the vehicle overturned twice,” explained Namwaza. 

He said the seven passengers sustained various degrees of injuries and were pronounced dead at Salima District Hospital.

“The driver sustained fractures on left leg and arm and has been referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for further treatment.

Eleven passengers escaped with minor injuries,” said Namwaza.
