7 die in Nkhata Bay road accident

Seven people have died and two others are in critical condition after a truck they were travelling in was involved in an accident at Lwanatonga in Nkhata Bay.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola said on Monday the truck, a Freight Liner registration SA 2491 with a trailer registration BQ 799, overturned and caught fire after the driver failed to negotiate a bend.
accident_policeHe claimed that the driver, John Mwenyeri, who also died in the accident, was overspeeding and failed to apply brakes when he reached the bend.

Passengers were trapped after the trailer covered them. They died on the spot except for two who are in critical condition and have been admitted to Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH).

Police have identified the other deceased persons as Noel Nevius Chiumia, 42, of Tunduma Village, Len Nkhata, 53, of Chipimbiringa Village, Kingsley Kasambara ,45, of Tambikani Village and Paweck Mkandawire, 30, of Chipimbininga Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabunduli in Nkhata Bay.

Two others are yet to be identified and are lying at MCH mortuary. Police have since called on people to help identify the two.
