Police in Chiradzulu have arrested eight people who are suspected of being ring leaders of the mob that “gruesomely” hacked to death a police officer on August 25 this year.

Chiradzulu police publicist James Kalemba said the eight were arrested in a pre-dawn raid in Ndalama village in the area of senior chief Chitera on Wednesday morning.

Kalemba said the operation was always on the cards but the police had to gather enough intelligence over the past weeks so that they could identify and pin-point the main culprits who had been at large since the murder of the officer.

Said Kalemba: “This operation was so critical and dangerous because a lot of people in this particular area have a predisposition to stage violent confrontations, especially against the police.”

According to Kalemba, the arrested suspects, whose age range is within 17 to 25, have been charged with murder which is contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code and they will appear before court soon.

The late officer, Andrew Chiyesa of Namadzi police post, was hacked to death using machetes by a village mob in Ndalama village in the area of Senior Chief Chitera by a village mob.

Chiyesa and six other police officers were forcefully prevented by the villagers from affecting a warrant of arrest issued by Mbulumbudzi magistrate court against one of the current murder suspects.
