At least 98 United Democratic Front (UDF) members from the Central Region of Malawi last Tuesday joined President Joyce Banda’s People’s Party (PP).

The defectors, who renounced their membership from the Friday Jumbe camp of the party at PP’s offices in Lilongwe, were led by Levy Luwemba who was UDF’s deputy national organising secretary.

The defectors included regional governor Samson Mazengera, publicity secretary Jack Kalonga, regional director of women Linley Tembo and director of youth Meja Kwalenga.

Luwemba said they defected to the ruling party after being impressed by PP’s policies and ideologies.

“We have decided to join People’s Party because of the participative and inclusive style of leadership which President Joyce Banda has displayed since she assumed office,” he said.

PP senior members present at the function included national publicity secretary Steven Mwenye, provincial chairperson Kizito Ngwembe, Clement Stambuli, Salim Bagus, Paul Maulidi, Clara Makungwa and Paison Kaisi.

Speaking in an interview, Stambuli said such defections, which he claimed are happening almost on a daily basis, are a sign of confidence people have in PP.
