‘Coarse hair, soft hands?’

Your beauty questions answered

—I have been keeping my hair natural for a long time and finally decided to relax, but it won’t straighten. It’s straight one day and back to normal the next day. What can I do Lucy? Beatrice

Answer: You may be using the wrong relaxer for your hair type. Next time you relax your hair, pay careful attention to what hair type the relaxer you are using caters for. Relaxers come in three different strengths for different hair textures. Mild, for soft hair, regular, for normal hair, and super for coarse hair. You are probably relaxing your hair with a mild relaxer, while your hair is coarse. This is why it is not straightening. Try Dark and Lovely, Olive Oil or Sunsilk coarse hair or super relaxer.

— Happy New Year Lucy! Keep up the good work! How do I care for hair with excessive sweating? How often should I wash my hair without drying it?

Answer: Washing your hair everyday dries out your hair and scalp. Your scalp produces natural oils to keep hair and skin healthy. Too much washing can strip away the oils. Washing your hair every three days is recommended, but people who are into intense physical activity, or those who sweat excessively like yourself, should wash their hair every other day. This helps clean your scalp, and leave you smelling good all the time. Use a good shampoo like Olive Oil or Dark and Lovely. Apply the shampoo to the top of your head massaging, it into a rich lather. Always work towards the end of the hair line to bring in all strands of hair. For extra clean hair, use a teaspoon of baking soda with your favourite shampoo. Mix the two in your hand, wash and rinse well. The baking soda removes build-up of shampoo, conditioners, sprays, and mousse and leaves your hair smelling clean.
