‘Questions on dry scalp and sensitive skin’

Question: Your article on 6th February 2011 really touched me as I too have a dry itchy scalp. Could you please help me out on the following?

1. Where can I get this coconut oil that you mentioned?

2. You talked about yoghurt; should I use plain yoghurt or flavoured?

3. If I’m not mistaken, you mentioned three steps; the first one involving coconut oil followed with yoghurt and a mixture of milk, honey and olive oil. Should I use these three steps at once or are they three different remedies?

Please help me, as I have tried a lot of different oils to get rid of my dandruff and none of them worked. Presently, I wash my hair every week.

I also have a problem with my facial skin; I cannot apply powder because my skin is so sensitive, even baby powder makes me react. I am getting married in July and really need to start wearing make-up. Alternatively, I could do my make-up and I skip the powder, but I will need your help on that.

Answer: You can get coconut oil in most of the Indian shops where they sell spices or Dhara’s Beauty Shop as well as City Boutique if you live in Blantyre.

Plain yoghurt is recommended for conditioning your scalp after shampooing your hair as opposed to flavoured yoghurt.  It is more beneficial if you mix this with an egg.

The three steps are done separately, but you can also mix the yoghurt, egg, honey and olive oil; this works even better in moisturising your scalp and leaves your hair soft, shiny and manageable.

Do Gro products are not readily available here, but you can sometimes find them in City Boutique and One Stop pharmacy shops.

Finding the right make-up for sensitive skin can be complicated.  The best make-up for you is the one labelled “non-comedogenic” or “hypoallergenic.”  These products are designed to be less likely to cause allergic reactions. Select powder foundations or cover-up cream.

Powder cosmetics contain fewer preservatives because they don’t contain water which is more susceptible to bacterial breeding.  If you prefer liquid foundation, it should contain silicone.  You will find such make-up from Mac, Fashion Fair, Mary Kay, Iman, Estee Lauder and Clinique.

Most importantly, ensure that your face is thoroughly clean before applying any make-up.  Follow the CTM (cleanse, tone and moisturise) formula, and you will be amazed with the difference it makes to your skin.  Forever Living Aloe Vera products are also good for sensitive skin.
